For a decade, we’ve been committed to making a difference in the lives of children and families across communities. Here’s a glimpse into our journey of impact and achievements over the past 10 years:

Durban based NPO Zero2Five Trust, an ECD (Early Childhood Development) Specialist, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year in October. Over 10 years, Zero2Five’s team, partners, funders and beneficiaries have witnessed continuous programme expansions, celebrations and a few setbacks, and both joy and struggle. Many of these memories won’t be captured on film, reports or memorialized in history books, but these moments built a resilient, growing non-profit organization. That’s why we continue to ground our community development model on strengthening the Early Childhood Development sector in rural areas by supporting ECD owners and practitioners with various services allowing them to build capacity, self-sustainability and to offer holistic nutrition and early learning programmes for the families in their communities. From 2014 to 2024, we grew our 3 ECD programmes in rural areas in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape to supporting 521 ECD Centres, 984 ECD practitioners and in excess of 13 000 children.
Our anniversary “Amplify Rural ECD” campaign is the catalyst for realizing our vision of achieving better early learning outcomes in rural, marginalized communities. As we celebrate Zero2Five’s 10th anniversary, we are proud to
take our 3 ECD programmes Nutrition WASH, Play & Learn and ECD Registration & Capacity Building to the next level. South Africa’s children can only thrive when everyone has access to adequate nutrition and quality, early learning programmes. Instead of throwing a party, we have offered 100 bursaries to rural ECD practitioners to give them a chance to register and take part in 2 main modules for “Legacy” Level 4 SETA ECD Training with our training partners Midlands Community College (MCC) and LETCEE.
The importance and urgency of registering for this legacy ECD training before 30 June 2024 is that from July 2024, no further learners can be registered with the ETDPSETA, as the qualification is changing to the Occupational Certificate in ECD. The new qualification will be 18 months in duration and requires English and Maths at Grade 12 (Grade 11 learners can be accepted but will be required to undergo a Maths and English proficiency exam). We assessed the well over 600 ECD practitioners at rural, unfunded ECD centres in the KZN Local Municipalities we serve and our concern is that the majority of them will neither be able to afford financially, nor have the necessary entry requirements for the upgraded Occupational Certificate in ECD post July 2024. This can mean for such rural ECD centres, that in the event that they are unable to employ a qualified ECD teacher, they might face closure. The various training groups rolled out in Bergville in April and are scheduled right through to the end of June.
We furthermore secured several giveaways for the many under-resourced ECD centres on our programme and are looking forward to seeing the children at the winning centres test and enjoy these new, educational toys. Particularly exciting is a bespoke and fantastic “Busy Board” pensioner Timothy Taylor in Waterfall is making for us and which 10 ECD centres will be gifted with: a bright, colourful and engaging, standing toy allowing 8 children various activities at once, including ball followers, mazes, threading activities, blackboard writing and more. The multi-tactile panels benefit sensory integration, cognitive as well as motor planning development.
